29.09.2010

Today we had anotrher group discussion about how to further our ideas. We concluded that Stone Cold Sober, is a very hard song to maike a video for.
We did some research into tghe meaning of the song and found that the message behind the lyrics are 'trying to be something you're not' so we came up with a concept of 'Imagination vs Reality' from this we came up with a few ideas;
- Alice in Wonderland theme, like gwen stefani in the video to her song, What You Waiting For?
- Having dull colours to reflect her real life and bright to reflact her imaginary life.
- starting with a depressing scene for the eye with hardly any colour and people lying around.. not sober.
- Her falling into an imaginary place.
We also thought these ideas would be good to use in our cd case and promotional advert. The Alice in Wonderland theme could possibly run through the who advertising pack.

This is the email I have sent, i am hoping to get a reply.

Dear Factory Films,
My name is Elizabeth Kennelly and I am studying Media Studies at an A Level standard.
This year me and a few of my peers have been set a project to create a music video to a song of our choice, and we have decided that we would like to possibly use Paloma Faiths 'Stone Cold Sober'
We have no intent to sell the video in any way, this is purely for educational purposes.
I would greatly appreciate if you could get back to me.
Thankyou.
Your Sincerely
Elizabeth Kennelly

Getting Permission..

To be able to use the song in our video we need to make sure we ask the Music Producers of the song, in case of being persecuted for Copyright. So I need to find out about who to contact and ask for permission from.

Stone Cold Sober Lyrics

I'll be the late night lady you won't recognize
I'm a chameleon I'm always in disguise

I'd read your future but it´s written in the past
Take a good look might be your last

Don´t try to show me
Cause you don't know me
Stay away!!

I can be wider than the wind
119 miles an hour
I´m in a whole other dimension
Dancing doubles on the floor

You think I'm crazy, a little bit hazy
But I'm stone cold sober

You're telling me something
But there's nothing cheap as words

I'm walking away before I do affect the birds
Excuse me Mr I've got other things to do
Than to stand here listening to you

Stop talking at my face
Take a rocket out to space and...
Stay away!!

I can be wider than the wind
119 miles an hour
I'm in a whole other dimension
Dancing doubles on the floor

You think i'm crazy, a little bit hazy
But I´m stone cold...

I can be wider than the wind
119 miles an hour
I´m in a whole other dimension
Dancing doubles on the floor

You think i'm crazy, a little bit hazy
But I'm stone cold sober

In the madness of the storm
I'm the one to carry on
I don't need no medicine

I´f you're looking for a cure
Don´t be knocking at my door
I´ll never let you in

Take a rocket out to space
And stay out of my place

I can be wider than the wind
119 miles an hour
I´m in a whole other dimension
Dancing doubles on the floor

You think i'm crazy, a little bit hazy
But I´m stone cold.. .

I can be wider than the wind
119 miles an hour
I´m in a whole other dimension
Dancing doubles on the floor

You think i'm crazy, a little bit hazy
But I'm stone cold sober

Our Final Song Choice.. (or so we thought)

Our Final Song Choice is 'Stone Cold Sober' by Paloma Faith, We have chose this song because we love the beat, and the lyrics. We feel we can create a good music video with it. Our own ideas can really come out as we can be very creative with the song.
Paloma Faith
'Born in Hackney, London, Paloma Faith is half Spanish and half British. As an ex magician’s assistant, trained contemporary dancer, St Martin’s alumni with an MA in theatre direction, a performer in burlesque shows, and an actress, Paloma has been mixing artistic media throughout her short adult life. A few years ago she introduced music, her primary love, into the equation, at first mimicking the blues and soul singers she so admired, but eventually finding her own voice.'

Paloma Faith has very dramatic songs, with almost a theatrical feel to them. This goes with her theatrical dresses, and the fact that she used to be a magicians assistant.

Her most recent album, with the song 'Stone Cold Sober' was released on the 15th July 2009.

Idea.2 - Paloma Faith

Paloma Faith has some amazing songs, which could be a bit easier to make a song to. As the narrative is often very strong. This could allow us as a group to be a bit more creative with what we want to do. The song we would choose to possibly do is 'Stone Cold Sober' (below)

This would be an interesting song to do, althought it is not in the rock genre, it is very dramatic and could cuse for some good lighting, perhaps strobe lighting, and low key lighting.

Another song I thought we ould do from Paloma Faith is 'New York';
But my group did not like this choice because they thought it would cause for very good lip syncing and acting, which could be a factor, that if goes wrong could effect the overall Music Video.

The Shortlisted Songs..

We have worked our choices down to these three songs, and have good ideas behind the three;

1)

Advantages;
- We have a good idea behind the song, that will allow us to experiment with camera angles.
- A good strong beat to edit to.

Disadvantages;
- We will need many people in the video, which could be hard to organise
- We would need a commited group of people to be the 'band', meaning they would have to be ready to come out and film even if we just need a few more shots.
- The idea we have may become boring throughout the music video, it would be very hard to keep the audience interested.

2)

Advantages;
- The narrative lyrics allow us to be more creative around the story.
- The beat of the song allows different lengths of a shot to be edited, for example some longer shots and some shorter, sharper shots.
- One woman singer, which would mean one of our group will be able to star in it, so we could get shots and film more a lot easier.

Disadvantages;
- Filming a narrative would mean a lot more filing and sharper editing.

3)

This song we did not really come up with an idea for because it was our third and last song we would go to. However I still think it would be very suitable to do a song to.

Genre Research

Genre's
Genre is a critical tool that helps us study texts and audience responses to texts by dividing them into categories based on common elements.

Daniel Chandler ( 2001) - The word genre comes from the French (and originally Latin) word for "kind" or "class".

The term is widely used in literary theory and media theory to refer to a distinctive type of text.

Sub Genres

Barry Keith Grant (1995) - Within genres there are sub-genres which allows music to have the same basic elements, but different components.

Genres are divided up into more specific categories that allow audiences to identify them specifically by their familiar and what become recognisable characteristics.

Steve Neale (1995) - "Genres are not 'systems', they are processes of systematization" i.e. they are dynamic and evolve over time.All genres will have similar mise-en-scene which helps us identify what genre the song is allocated to.

Jason Mittell (2001) - Genres are cultural categories that surpass the boundaries of media texts and operate within the industry, audience and cultural practices as well

Meeting in Starbucks

Today we had a small meeeting to discuss what we're going to do about our music video, and how we will set about to create what we want. to do this we have come up with a few things we need to do to make sure that we can get the best from what we want;

1) We will need a committed 'band' who will come and film when we need them to.

2) We need to check out the music studio in our school to see if we would be able to make a successful 'set' that would be good for the auditions and the performance.

3) We need to see if enough people would want to be in the music video to get the effect we need.

Once we have looked at doing these things we will them make a decision to what we want to do, go along with this idea or think about another one.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Scar Tissue Live.

We need to capture this element of performing on stage in our video, and even teach or show our actors and actresses how we would want them to act on stage when the performance part of the video comes.
From watching the Red Hot Chili Peppers the band members need to feel the music and just move to the beat (quite obvious) but we also need to make sure they are not afraid to do so. Unlike 'Kiss' they should not jump around and head bang, simply relax to the beat of the music.

First Idea

Here are some examples of what we would hope to achieve, and what we have got this first idea from.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Tell Me Baby

Aerosmith - Pink

This second one gave us a good idea that we can't continuously lip sync the whole way through,rather have people or instruments to break up the lip syncing.

First Idea.1

We have had an idea as a group if we do this song;
We would have auditions shown so that the beginning would be editied so that many different people are singing the song, in a continous way.. this would be the story to the formation of a band.
As the band start to come together the band members faces are shown more regularly, until the final band is picked.
The ending will be the final band playing a set or just final endd, perhaps also showing the band life.
The bands we would possibly like to make a video for are;

Taylor Swift - Mine

Imogen Heap - Hide and Seek

Temper Trap - Sweet Diposition

The Killers - When We Were Young

Chase and Status - Let You Go

Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Can't Stop

Taylor Swift - Mine

Taylor Swifts songs are often good to make a music video too because they have a story to them, like the above 'Mine' The story is simple, which i think allows the music video to bring in many aspects of shots, camera work and settings/places. Perhaps allowing the producers to bring in their own take of it. As well as having Taylor Swift lip syncing at the same time. Which ties in everything together.
This is why i would like to do a song perhaps with a bit more of a story to it, because aswell as following the story we could expand on that idea a bit more.

Kiss - 'God Gave Rock n' Roll To Ya'

In this music video you can see all the aspects of Rock Music, and Rock Genre. The loud band, electric guitars and their solos. As well as the heavy beat of the drums and bass guitar.
The 'style' of Rock music is also expressed in this video through the costumes, and hair, they are portraying themselves as hard people and that is what rock music is. A hard or 'tough mans music' - Kiss.

Mood Board:

The traditional 'Rock' Scene consists of mainly heavy beats and occasional solos. In time the more casual 'Rock n' Roll' has developed into more of a Heavy Rock genre, however nowadays there are both in the main stream market.

The electric guitar is often a symbol of rock music, and more
often than not is the instrument which is played by more of the band members. Sometimes smashed against the sides of the stage, that is also something that is often in the rock culture.

Rock, hard rock or Rock n' Roll have all become ways of living aswell as a genre of music;

'Sex, Drungs, and Rock n' Roll'

The famous ROck band 'Kiss', representing the costume and face of Rock Music, over the top and dramatic makeup, Spikes and tight clothing, often men who see themsselves, or become 'Sex Gods'. This fits also with the idea of a lifestyle choice, sexualist women and men.. again;
'Sex, Drugs and Rock n' Roll'

Imogen Heap.1

Having decided we might like to do a video from the artist Imogen Heap we wanted to find other A2 Students who have also done it, this is one video we found.

We as a group have fallen in love with this video. The collection of interesting shots all merge together to make something more than just a video of random shots. A montage. However, the continuity of the low key lighting brings the whole video into one, so that it makes sense and is therefore seen more as a planned music video.
If we were to do a video of Imogen Heap we would want to make more of a story, so that it could get through and possibly impact on the audience more.
