The Rule Of Thirds

The "Rule of Thirds" refers to the accurate composition of a photo or action shot. It says that in order to create more tension and energy in a shot layout thats each main elements in view will have to be along a meetting point of the lines.

An Example of the lines can be seen on the right.
In our shots we have been trying to imagine the lines as we are framing our shots so that each shot can stand out in its own unique way. Leaving our audience feeling interested at the end.

Left Rachel has started to cut up the pieces of material to make the 'floaty' dress. These pieces are to make the bp0dice part of the dress, it will be mainly white with the floral material rouched in the middle.
Below to the right is the floral material used to make the rest of the dress. We feel that by using this light coloured floral material we are not conforming to then usual ideas about purity and happiness, but also bringing in a more contemporary and stylish look to the costume, as well as bringing in the more natural elements of the fields and woods where we will be filming her in the woods.

Andrew Godwin developed 5 key points into making a Contemporary Videos;
-
  1. Genre characteristics (fast car in R&B videos) Taio Cruz ft Kesha 'Dirty Picture'
  2. Relationship between lyrics and visuals The Script 'Man Who Can't be moved'. The opening lyrics are going back to the corner where I first saw you, gonna camp in my sleeping bag, not gonna move. This is accompanied by the opening shot of him walking down the street and sitting down following the lyrics almost exactly and introducing thee audience to the story of the song.
Relationship between music and visuals - Jayz ft Alicia Keys 'Empire State of Mind' the opening of this song shows still shots of new york cut to the beat of the song bringing the music and visuals together.
  3. Frequent Close ups of artist - Beyonce 'Halo' Beyonce is a global superstar and who has to very distinct types of music video the performance videos such as 'Single Ladies' and 'Sweet Dreams' and the narrative based videos such as 'If I were a boy' and 'Halo' which both use frequent close ups to make her more relateable in these videos so audience can to relate to the emotional side of her songs.
  4. Notion of Looking or Voyeurism - Katy Perry 'Waking up in Vegas' At 0:50 Katy looks at the camera then a point of view shot to her phone mp3 which has an image of her
  5. Intertextual references - Geri Halliwell 'It's raining men' as this video is dance based it follows the shot types almost exactly from the close up of the cd player to the wide shot of her in the hall to a popular dance film of the time.

A Handheld Shot Running Behind Eleanor

This is one shot we will need to perfect, a lot. Although I like the unsteadyness of it (as she runs away from her 'worser' life) perhaps we should look into other ways, to do it. We were thinking possibly someone in a trolley and the other two pushing it behind Elle or something like that.

Costumes

In our video the main character (Elle) will be in two different outfits. In one 'section' of the video.. ther badder times, when she is with her boyfriend we want her in simple black leggins and a top with boots, we would like the make up to be very heavily black, so that we could possibly get a shot of a black tear and make up coming down her face, this will represent how messed up the relationship has made her etc. We would also like her to have a black leather jacket that is open for when she runs to create movement, and just generally make the shot look better.
Below is an on set shot of Eleanor running where she will be in the video. She is wearing what I have spoken about above, we feel it is an effective costume.

Here is some phone footage of us practising what we are going to do when she gets hit. I like tbhis lighting a lot, and the real cemeras will help us get a better picture. This lighting would also help us to create the dramatic shadows we are looking to create.

On Monday Emily and Eleanor went to the second of our possible filming locations, and here they took photos and videos on their phones of where we would be filming each seperate shot.
From this we were able to draft a storyboard with the photos and screen shots of videos.
Here is our second draft of our digital Storyboard. We have added in many more shots as out ideas have developed we have included shots of shadows on the ground of the sadder times in her life.

The Two Step Flow Theory

Opinion leaders tend to be similar to those they influence—based on personality, interests, demographics, or socio-economic factors. These leaders tend to influence others to change their attitudes and behaviors.
The two-step theory refined the ability to predict how media messages influence audience behavior and explains why certain media campaigns do not alter audiences’ attitudes. This hypothesis provided a basis for the multi-step flow theory of mass communication.

Photos on Location.2

Here we are preparing for the shot below.

We're on the roof here, this is where we would like to shoot our sadder scenes, I really like the lighting and the amount of wind, I feel it represents her emotions and the relationship well.

Photos on Location

Here are some pictures of us whilst we were practise filming.

This Long Shot of Emily shows the location of where we hope will be a field that the protaganist can be happy in.

Here is Eleanor underneath the bridge that will signify her running from the bad times to the batter times. Into the future. (The Dog Days are Over)

First draft of our Storyboard

We have gone to our locations to take pictures and see how thing will work when we do come to filming, from this we created a rough story board of how we want our final production to look.

Hypodermic Needle Theory

The "Hypodermic Needle Model" uses the same idea of the "shooting" paradigm. It suggests that the media injects its messages straight into the passive audience. This passive audience is immediately affected by these messages. The public essentially cannot escape from the media's influence, and is therefore considered a "sitting duck".

We have practised our StoryBoarding techniques by storyboarding Paloma Faiths New York 'http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ki0xBb2wbr4&ob=av2n'.
For each shot as well as draw it we had to write the location of it, the shot type and the movement of the camera, what the actor/actress is doing on screen and the lyrics or audio that is happening at that time. This has helped us a lot in planning our own music video. And the vas amount of shots we are going to need for such a short amount of time.
